Top 5 Reasons to Volunteer in Kidmin

Top 5 Reasons to Volunteer in Kidmin

Volunteers are important, we all know this to be true. With that in mind, I wanted to come up with 5 reasons that are easy to remember to explain why they would want to volunteer in kid's ministry. Let's face it, we all have to give the "volunteer pitch" to people more than we'd like to, so I'm hoping that this post can help us not only gain some new volunteers, but also remind our current volunteers just how important and fun kid's ministry really is. Now, in no particular order, here are my top 5 reasons to volunteer in kid's ministry!

1. Meet new friends

Every person looks for a place to belong and make friends, even at church and we try to make our kid's ministry team feel like they are part of a "family". Many volunteers who serve together may not have ever crossed paths or social groups if they had not met in kid's church. Serving in kid's ministry gives us all something in common right from the start. As you can see from the pictures, we have a pretty good time doing ministry together.

2. Make a big mess

There is nothing like getting to make a big mess, and in kid's ministry, we have every kind of mess imaginable. We make our leaders into human food, throw colored chalk and paint at each other, take pies in the face because our kids brought guests, let kids pour buckets of slime on our heads because they raised their goal for missions...the list goes on. Last year at camp we were covered in mud the first day, paint the next day, and on the final day we were covered in chalk and slime, but we enjoyed every minute of it! I'm always looking for a way to make a bigger mess and where can an adult make those kinds of messes? Only in #kidmin!

3. Minister and be ministered to

When serving with kids, we have the privilege of doing ministry while being ministered to ourselves. If you aren't being ministered to in some way while doing kid's ministry, you're doing it wrong. We get the opportunity to worship, listen to the sermon, and pray right alongside the kids while serving. That's pretty awesome! I know you may be thinking that the service is just for the kids, but in my experience that's not the case! I have leaders tell me all the time that they learn and are ministered to through my "kids' sermons". The other amazing opportunities we receive when serving in kid's ministry is getting a chance to pray with a kid, help them find verses in their Bible, or answer questions about God. Tell me you aren't getting ministered to when you get to pray with a child to accept Jesus into their life for the first time. That's what it's all about!

4. Magnify your gifts

We may not have everyone's gifts represented in kid's ministry, but we sure have a bunch! If you are interested in singing, playing an instrument, or leading worship, kid's ministry is a great place to start growing in those gifts. If you are interested in teaching or managing childcare, kid's ministry is a great place to get some experience. If you are interested in learning how to run audio, lighting, or media software, kid's ministry is great place to start practicing. If you are interested in any type of ministry/public speaking, kid's ministry will get you comfortable speaking in front of a very honest audience.  You name the gift or talent, and we can most likely find a place for you to grow.

5. Make a difference in kid's lives

At the end of the day, anyone volunteering in kid's ministry is making a difference in a child's life. You don't have to be the one preaching the sermon to make an impact. Many times all it takes is a smile, a kind word, or just remembering their name to show a kid that you care about them. What if the hour they spend in your preschool class or in kid's church is the best hour of their week because someone took the time to show them God's love and share God's Word with them? Now, that's a reason to volunteer in kid's ministry.

Do you agree with this list? What reasons would you add to encourage people to volunteer in your kid's ministry?
